Potentiometric Map The highest water levels are in the northwest corner and the lowest in the southeast, therefore the direction of groundwater movement is towards the southeast. Potentiometric Surface Mapping (1:48000) This series, created to provide e-products (such as GIS coverages) for quick release includes: Maps and digital coverage of unconsolidated and/or bedrock potentiometric surface lines A potentiometric surface is the imaginary plane where a given reservoir of fluid will "equalize out to" if allowed to flow. A potentiometric surface is based on hydraulic principles. For example, two connected storage tanks with one full and one empty will gradually fill/drain to the same level. The potentiometric surface of the Upper Floridan aquifer in May–June 2010 shown on this map was constructed as part of the U.S. Geological Survey Floridan Aquifer System Groundwater Availability Study (U.S. Geological Survey database, 2011).

Potentiometric Surface Maps. In 2006, the Groundwater Program started mapping the potentiometric surface of the unconsolidated (sand-and-gravel) and consolidated (bedrock) aquifers in the state. These maps show the contour of the water surface in the different aquifers. From the contours, the direction of groundwater flow can be determined.
