Dichtung, as the “essence” of art/poetry, is not limited to the linguistic expression of “poetry,” or poesy. Rather, for Heidegger, Dichtung represents all creative, projective events of truth’s revelation, and it is “due to art’s poetic essence (as Dichtung) that, in the midst of beings, art breaks open an open place, in whose openness everything is other than usual” (p. 197). What Hölderlin attempts in his poetry is a complex retrieval of a Greek experience that never happened, of a vision of originary beauty whose power is not historical, but futural. That is, for Hölderlin, Greece exists as the name of a tragic hope born out of the painful loss of something irrecoverable, a hope whose very utterance bespeaks the power of homecoming.
